31/5/05: York City Trophy
Bank
Holiday Monday saw over 100 orienteers descend on the city centre of York for
the 5th running of the York City Trophy. Oli had won this race for the previous
3 years whilst I was pushed into 2nd last year by SYO and GB team-mate Helen
Winskill. This year's race saw us start and finish in Parliament Street once
more - right in the centre. Route choices around streets, snickelways, tunnels
and bridges saw us make our way to St Nicholas Field Urban Nature Park for some
more traditional orienteering for a few controls before it was back on the tarmac
with controls on church doorways, gravestones, an ice house, hidden in very narrow
snickelways and the like and a route choice that lead some competitors
to consider jumping off the bar walls!
I had a pretty clean run to win by a 2 minute margin from Karen Heppenstall and Liz Day (Helen walked round due to injury) whilst Oli lost a bit of a time and finished 3rd 30 seconds down on winner Neil Northrop of Sheffield University who beat Niall Bourke, Leeds University, by just 2 seconds to leave him to collect the silver for the second year running. Jenny Thornton of CLOK and Stuart Hooton EBOR won the junior races. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped this race to happen - hope to see more orienteers there next year...
