27/10/04: Walkley Street Orienteering
Last
night saw a unique training experience for the 20+ SYO and ShUOC members who
took part - long distance night sprint orienteering on the brand new A3 map
of Walkley and Upperthorpe, Sheffield's very own 'urban maze'. Neil Northrop
finished off the specially produced map and planned testing courses which took
in city parks, housing estates and streets.
Highlights
included controls in Crookes Valley Park, S10 Leisure Centre, Ruskin Park and
even Tim Tett's garden! All the way we were supported by locals who were genuinely
interested in what we were doing. Matt Crane cruised round in the fastest time
and participants were attracted from as far afield as the Lake District. The
map, which has been made over the summer by several of us local runners, is
right on the doorsep for many of us. We will be using it for sprint training
through the winter and who knows, maybe it will be used for something bigger
in the future...
