3/6/04: York Race 2004
Helen
of Joy was the headline in the Yorkshire Evening Press after Helen Winskill
took the title of York Trophy winner this year defeating Jenny by just 18 seconds,
after a 2 year reign. Clare Leventon completed an SYO whitewash in 3rd place
just 2 minutes down on the GB squad members. Oli held on to his title winning
by 40 seconds for Niall Bourke of Leeds University, with local hero Matt Speake
in 3rd.
Orienteers
travelled from as far a field as Bristol and Aberdeen to compete in the race
which took place in a crammed York City centre on Bank Holiday Monday. Lots
of people asked what was going on and were given information on the sport and
event. Postcards of the map and a specially planned tourist course were on sale.
Claire Hughes, Yorkshire Evening Press reporter, had her first go at orienteering
and really enjoyed it taking 32 mins for the 2.2 km course with just one big
mistake, the event results were reported in the newspaper the following day
with this photo and there will be a feature this weekend.
