Sweden 2004
WOC 2004 will be tough. There are a lot of people who know this terrain very well. It will be a real test of technique and orienteering skill and the Nordic countries will have a big advantage. Lots of preparation is essential for us continental Europeans. Physically is is fairly flat and soft but not too heavy. Terrain strength will be important.
The Middle distance terrain is subtle (2.5m contours) but very detailed. Constant map contact at high speed will and accurate compass will be the most important skills.
The Long Distance terrain could be the most technical of all. There are pockets of intense detail on slopes interspersed with large areas of marsh and empty forest.
The Sprint Distance will involve sections of high speed forest orienteering and a lot of path running. The terrain is typical for Swedish town forests with ski trails and steep, rocky hills.
